Round The Whirl 001 – Medium + Peter Kirn
For the first edition of Round the Whirl, Medium begins with an hour of deep and heady island vibes inspired by his time on Koh Phangan. For the second hour, he invites Peter Kirn, a producer/DJ, technologist, and journalist based in Berlin, to join him for a guest mix celebrating the cutting edge of the Asian underground.
“I was feeling an itch for frenetic dystopian futurism, and was inspired by artist friend’s adventurous collage of sounds and asymmetrical rhythmic. I also think about some of the energy in the last longer-distance trips and missing artist friends from those journeys, so to find this combination, I mix from Japan to Philippines to Indonesia, Taipei to LA to yes, Bangkok and Berlin. Those experimental artists compose those fragmentary narratives, with voices real, transformed, and synthetic. I hope that as electronic music evolves, we don’t only listen to musical centers, but to the deeper connections we feel between one another. That includes the recent decentralized remix project from Senyawa; my contribution on L_KW is here. All this music is on Bandcamp for the digging and buying.”
Kirn is a prolific music artist himself, and also builds platforms around new use of technology in music. Classically trained as a composer and pianist, Kirn now produces adventurous techno and experimental music.
