Artist Interview – Mark Henderson

Today we meet DJ Mark Henderson as part of our ‘Kao na’ Artist Interviews series.
9 is a lucky number in Thailand
. 9 also means forward stepping, progress. Kao na or 9 forward.
So, here are 9 questions to help you get to know the Artists on UMT.radio a little better.

1) First things first, what is your favourite Thai meal?
Pad Pak Kanar Moo Grob (Stir-Fried Kale with crispy pork).

2) Tell us more about you.
My name is Mark Henderson, I am 48 years old and I am from the UK. I have two passions in my life. Music and Chelsea Football Club. I’ve had the privilege of playing alongside some great DJ’s, including Sasha and Jon Pleased Wimmin. My favourite clubs used to be Sundisential in Birmingham, Strawbery Sundae in London, Zap club in Brighton, Tonic in Brighton and the Mannor in Bournemouth. I still get the same buzz now when I hear a great tune with amazing piano and vocals, the same way I did when I used to go hunting around record shops trying to find that banging tune to play out that weekend.

3) What genres do you play?
Nowadays, I play funky house with lots of piano and vocals. I started off playing happy hardcore, then trance, then to hard house. As I got older, I moved into house music.

4) How did you start DJing?
I went to my first rave in 1988 in a field close to my home and was instantly hooked on the whole outdoor rave scene. I would get my aunt who lived in London to tape the pirate radio stations onto TDK ’90s and post them to me. Eventually, I saved up and bought some Numark decks and a Gemini mixer and, away we went.

5) Who or what are your music influences?
Discovering Hed Kandi in 1999 changed my musical mind totally. This lead to discovering Stereo Sushi and Fierce Angel.

6) Favourite place to party in Thailand?
I like a good pool party in Bangkok. Nowhere in particular, as long as the music is good.

7) Are you making your own music? Do you have any tracks out?
No, the only tracks I made were on my son’s Playstation as I brought a game where you make your own tunes. They weren’t good.

8) What is your all-time favourite track?
Bizzare Inc – Playing With Knives

9) Finally, what are your thoughts about the launch of UMT.radio?
I’m excited to be asked to be a part of this. I can see big things coming for UMT.radio as Thailand and Asia doesn’t really have an underground music station.
